Originally proposed by a group of leading citizens who wished to see this area progress educationally, culturally and economically, the university was established by the state legislature as a regional teachers college in 1925.
Today, Delta State – located in Cleveland – still follows the same principles with a vision of commitment to students. Delta State University pledges that students will learn and grow in an environment that fosters discovery and creativity. “Delta State is about the whole person," DSU President John Hilpert maintains. |
| “That is to say we think about educating students in multi-dimensional ways – classrooms, libraries, laboratories, technology centers, playing fields, offices, conference rooms, and social settings. Opportunities to learn are everywhere.” |
|
To that end, DSU pursues an agenda that works to accomplish an ambitious, yet laudable goal of becoming the best regional university in America, as it combines a heritage of academic strength with a robust commitment to serving people and communities, particularly in the Mississippi Delta.
Standards of Excellence
As a regional university, Delta State University serves as an educational and cultural center for the Mississippi Delta, offering service on the main campus in Cleveland and campus centers in Clarksdale and Greenville. The university offers undergraduate, graduate and continuing education programs of study leading to baccalaureate and master’s degrees in the College of Arts and Sciences, Business, Education and the School of Nursing, as well as a Doctorate of Education.
The school’s College of Arts and Sciences focuses on programs in the humanities, fine arts, mathematics, social sciences, and natural sciences. Students of the college benefit from state-of-the-art facilities and resources such as the Bologna Performing Arts Center, the Capps Museum and Archives, and the university’s new Delta Music Institute which provides an exemplary education in both music and business.
Because the need for well-educated, highly skilled nurses has never been greater, Delta State’s School of Nursing is preparing students for all areas of healthcare via education and nursing practice.
Within the College of Education, future professional educators are trained to address societal, educational and personal needs. The college assures graduate quality with the national PRAXIS exam for education majors. DSU has received national recognition for its innovative approach to preparing school principals.
Meanwhile, the College of Business challenges students with educational opportunities that prepare and equip them for numerous leadership positions in the marketplace. Most recently, the college debuted two new programs, Hospitality Services Management and International Business.
Beyond the Classroom
With an enrollment that continues to grow annually, Delta State University remains dedicated to serving its diverse student body. At the same time, Delta State is working hard to maintain its position as a perennial powerhouse in NCAA II athletics. The University competes in 13 intercollegiate sports as a member of the Gulf South Conference. All told, the Statesmen have earned six women’s basketball national championships, one football national championship, one baseball national championship, two men’s basketball elite eight appearances and ten College World Series appearances.
